How Crimson Moon Compares
A community comparison of Crimson Moon to other games in the action-RPG space. Useful for deciding whether Crimson Moon is "for you."
Crimson Moon vs. Dark Souls
Closer than the trailer suggests. Crimson Moon's combat has the same parry-window and stamina-management feel as Dark Souls.
Where it differs: No PvP, no co-op summoning, no message system. The solo/co-op split is intentional — the game is built for two players or none.
Crimson Moon vs. Returnal
The run-based loop is similar. Every Crimson Moon hunt starts at Sanctus Clypeus and ends back there. That is the Returnal ship loop, scaled up.
Where it differs: Crimson Moon has no procedural generation. Every Ward is fixed. Players who like Returnal's randomization may find Crimson Moon less surprising; players who want to memorize patterns will prefer it.
Crimson Moon vs. Diablo 4
Both have loot grind. Crimson Moon's loot is more curated — fewer items, more identity per item.
Where it differs: No class system. No endless paragon grind. The meta is bounded, not infinite.
Crimson Moon vs. Elden Ring
Elden Ring is open-world; Crimson Moon is not. Crimson Moon's Gildenarch is structured into Wards you clear in order.
Build complexity is comparable. Both games have a four-axis build system (gear, skills, Boons, attributes for Elden Ring; gear, Weapon Arts, Boons, Angels for Crimson Moon).
Crimson Moon vs. Hades
The roguelike framing is similar. Crimson Moon is run-based; the meta persists across runs.
Where it differs: No dialogue-tree story. The Nephilim's relationships are environmental, not conversational.
Which one is "right" for you?
| If you like... | You'll like... |
|---|---|
| Dark Souls combat | Crimson Moon (with caveats: no PvP) |
| Run-based progression | Crimson Moon (more structured than Returnal) |
| Curated loot | Crimson Moon (more curated than Diablo) |
| Co-op first | Crimson Moon (the dev team treats co-op as core) |
| Solo first | Crimson Moon (the dev team treats solo as core) |
If you bounced off Dark Souls because of the difficulty, Crimson Moon's defensive build and difficulty options make it more approachable. If you bounced off Returnal because of the procedural generation, Crimson Moon's fixed Wards will feel more learnable.
